Lean how we helped Sanoma Learning streamline their data infrastructure and workflows
Sanoma Learning is a leading K-12 European learning company. Its learning products and services enable and support teachers and schools in developing the talents of every child to reach their full potential. By offering both printed and digital learning content, as well as digital learning and teaching platforms for primary, secondary, and vocational education, the company aims to expand its positive impact on learning across Europe.
Malmberg and VAN INN, two educational publishers and subsidiaries of Sanoma Learning, faced the challenge of streamlining their data processes and migrating their existing (dbt Core) codebases and (Snowflake) configurations toward a (dbt) Cloud environment.
Malmberg relied on Snowflake stored procedures, while VAN IN utilized dbt Core, creating inconsistencies in their workflows.
Operating on the same data and sharing similar internal processes, both organizations needed a harmonized tech stack and futureproof data governance to facilitate collaboration, reuse each other's work, and enhance their collective efficiency. The lack of alignment in their workflows led to inefficiencies, lower data output quality, and increased risks due to non-standardized practices.
We began by mapping the current data practices - code & environment - of both Malmberg and VAN IN, including a comprehensive analysis of their stored procedures, Snowflake configurations, and dbt Core codebases.
Having mapped both the "as-is" and "to-be" situations, we were able to deliver a tailor-made roadmap for the data transformation journey of both companies toward dbt Cloud.
Our roadmap also provided the internal data team with guidelines on best practices for data modeling and release management in dbt Cloud.

After delivering the roadmap, we utilized Kali, our in-house migration tool, to significantly accelerate the migration from the existing codebases to dbt Cloud.
During the migration, we identified issues in the existing codebase and promptly communicated them to the customer, enabling them to address these challenges effectively. After the code conversion, Kali automated the validation process to ensure that the new system's output matched the old output. This automation eliminated manual effort, auto-approved identical results, and provided root-cause analysis for any discrepancies.
